To Whom It May Concern:
It’s no secret that the West Coast is the birthplace and sacred ground for skateboarding.
With 12.3 million skateboarders in the United States (which would suggest almost 3,000
in Pierce County alone), it’s clear that the sport appeals to an undeniably large portion
of our youth. The Northwest is home to two of the world’s most prestigious skatepark
designers which allow Washington and Oregon skateboarders some of the best skateparks
found anywhere.
Tacoma has shown great leadership in the past with the creation of Heidelburg skatepark
near Cheney Stadium. A few years ago, South Tacoma residents recognized the need for a
newer skating facility and created the skatepark at Stewart Heights. Both of these parks
are successful in drawing skaters from their neighborhoods but neither was designed to
offer challenges to experienced skateboarders. It’s time to seriously consider a
premium skatepark.
It’s a pity that Tacoma has yet to fully recognize the needs of this fantastic, positive
pastime. Though Tacoma’s two small skateparks are popular among skaters in those
neighborhoods, the unchallenging nature fails to engage the users once their obstacles
are mastered. More importantly, the newer park was simply not built to last and is
already seeing a great deal of unexpected wear and tear.
A professional-level skatepark
won’t suffer the same indignities and will become a beloved asset to any neighborhood
and the city at large.
